Cosmetic Changes

Firstly, after running The Staff Lounge through an online xHTML checking programme called W3 Validation which checks website script and if it follows accepted internet coding conventions i was shocked that we had over 100 errors on numerous pages such as the forum index, the sitemap index, etc ... but that has all be cleaned up now with The Staff Lounge running fully xHTML valid. :) During this process there has been a slight update in ashetic appearances of certain aspects such as for example, the homepage now displaying main content in the left majority table and then additional information and site navigation modules on the right hand side. There has also been the inclusion of an About Us page which is displayed on both the forum and sitemap home to help new visitors learn more about aims as a forum and what we intend to acheive.

Users and guests alike can now also Advertise on The Staff Lounge for the small price of either $10, or, $20 you can have your website link, or, image (depending upon your subscription type) listed throughout The Staff Lounge in places garenteeing high click-through rates and interaction from regular forum users and guests alike. For those more interested in becomming an advertiser on The Staff Lounge please view our Advertise page and fill out our PayPal powered purchase form.

Also now, for registered users only, is the advent of the Forum Jump icon in the navigational bar just situated below the site banner. Which, when pressed lists all of our forums and quick links to them to help users save clicking time returning to our forum index to access another forum after viewing or commenting on a particular thread or forum for instance.

If anyone has any comments, suggestions, and/or updates regarding these updates or The Staff Lounge in general then please let a member of staff know by either commenting within this thread or contacting them by PM.

New Profile View and Directory

Does the below image look familiar? Oh! Why yes, this is the old profile view which The Staff Lounge and many other vBulletin forums once ran, but after a couple of hours of template changes and revamps we have got a much more ergonomic profile view design. With a couple of extra profile fields for you to fill out too.

For example, Favourite Music and Favourite Films are just a couple of examples of the new additions with Favourite Games currently being planned as well to be added at a later date. An example of the new profile template in action can be viewed here.

Also after a couple of complaints with regards to the old vBadvanced Links Directory script we decided that instead we would look towards installing a stand alone version with greater functionality and offerings. This is mainly targetted towards forum resources, although we do offer areas for message boards in general to submit their websites. With submissions listed by their submission date.

You can access the Directory link either by clicking its corresponding link at the top of each page, or just by clicking here too. We hope you enjoy these new updates and make sufficient use of them too.

What 2006 Brings!

As 2005 draws to an end The Staff Lounge has decided to give its style and functionality abit of a makeover. First off the blocks is the revamp of the header template, to help include more informative, relevant, topical information for our users - hence, the display of "Latest Forum Threads". Also the Staff Lounge textual logo design has a bit of a makeover, presenting a much more informal, personal and collective representation of our mission statement to become your vBulletin resource. Also to coincide with the infusion of orange into the logo we have spiced up the image navigation too with nice little mouse-over effects to keep you entertained for a couple of minutes at least :)

Another big milestone The Staff Lounge has recently surpassed is the 10,000 post mark. Congratulations everyone and many more post, thread and member count milestone come our way - to coincide with our expansion the creation of a Graphics Team, and a Support Team to help ensure we are providing a sufficient level of support in our more specialised forums has been created and their positions now fully filled and we are hopeful you will be impressed with what Slash, Cole and Jennifer will provide in their relevant forums from now on :)

One of Jack's drives has suffered a failure today. Due to our use of RAID, this has not resulted in a total shutdown of the system. The RAID array is being rebuilt to return the system to a fully redundant state. During this process, drive access will be slowed and some higher than normal load will develop on the machine. This process is expected to complete within a few hours. At that time, we will be back to a fully redundant state among the drives in the system.

While it would normally be fine to let the disk array remain in this state (only a few sectors of the drive that failed) we feel it would be better to replace the drive in the system, seeing as it is only 2 months old at this point. A new drive is expected Monday or Tuesday and will be added to the system during the evening hours (to avoid interupting"primetime" ours for the server). This will not require downtime of the machine, but will require another rebuild (to essentially clone the data from the existing drive to the new one). Because we'll be able to select the time of rebuild, we'll do this so it causes the least interruption to the system.

Thanks for your understanding and thank the wonders of RAID and hot-swap drive technology for keeping your data 100% safe and available during this event

The Staff Lounge has updated the visual cosmetics of its forum layout to help improve user interaction and give members more control over their accounts and their profiles.

Advertisements Reshuffle
Advertisements will no longer be hounding content just below the navigation bar; and have now been moved to move user friendly positions; to the right of the logo - the bottom of threads - and on the left of the forum index page. Guests also have specific advertisements too.

Sidebar on Forum Index
Now, instead of taking up too much vertical space most of the Who's Online table segment has been moved over to the sidebar on the lefthand side of the forum index. This should allow for a better viewing of new threads, new private messages and relevant quick links to guide you around the forums.

New banner, logo design
We are currently trialing the implementation of a new logo for The Staff Lounge; although colour coordination and the finer specifics of the modern, sleek and unique design have yet to be defined i felt it was relevant to allow guests and members alike to become accustomed to it.

Links of Interest
The once "Partners" table has been visually revamped to not only display more links, but also to allow for easier viewing of the links registered. We are currently rechecking all those "Partners" for appropriate linkbacks - those without have been removed.

Special forum icons
As you are no doubt aware, forums in the Internet News and Forum Resources catergories have been applied their very own forum icons to help give them a more definitive and interactive view. We would like your feedback on these icons - size, relevance, etc ...

We hope you like the new additions as much as we do ;)

vBulletin 3.0.11

vBulletin 3.0.11 has been brought about due to a recently discovered XSS (cross site scripting) security issue. This issue is very hard to exploit, but we'd rather have the issue fixed. If you cannot upgrade, it is strongly recommended that you patch your installation.

Please see the end of this post for patching instructions. The issue stems from a minor PHP bug, so upgrading PHP to version 4.4.2 or 5.1.2 (once either is released) will also fix the issue.

If you are currently running vBulletin 3.5.x, please see the 3.5.2 announcement.

Installing or Upgrading vBulletin

Please see the appropriate manual sections: Installing vBulletin and Upgrading vBulletin.

Bug Reports

You may report bugs by clicking here. Before reporting a bug, please attempt to recreate the bug on a default, uncustomized style (especially if your errors are JavaScript related). Please note that as 3.5.x is our primary release, minor bugs will generally only be fixed for that version.

Patching Instructions

To patch your vBulletin 3.0.3 - 3.0.9 installation, download the zip file attached to this announcement. When you extract this zip, you will find an includes directory containing one file. Using FTP, connect to the server hosting your vBulletin and browse to the includes directory of your installation. Upload the file found in the patch into this directory -- if you have done this correctly, this will overwrite an existing file. Your board is now secure.

Note: one of the two XSS issues stems from a minor PHP bug. It will be fixed in PHP versions 4.4.2 and 5.1.2. If you are currently running vBulletin 3.0.x, please see the 3.0.11 announcement.

Installing or Upgrading vBulletin
